Funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (MBZ), the DAAD is offering competitive scholarships for Masters and Doctoral Studies in Poverty, Land & Agrarian Studies, offered at PLAAS, UWC. These scholarships are aimed at young candidates, mid-career professionals, researchers, and university staff. Female applicants and candidates from less privileged regions or groups are especially encouraged to participate in the programme.
Areas of Study
The programme supports those in subject areas with strong relevance to land governance/land management. The propose topic areas of study for scholarships are:
- Land tenure, including customary tenure, titling, and land markets
- Water, forestry, fisheries and ecosystems management
- Farming systems, agricultural development, and the rural non-farm economy
- Agricultural investment and inclusive business models
- Governance, policy frameworks, and investment standards
- Population, migration, and urbanization
- Climate change mitigation and adaptation
- Agro-food systems, food prices, and food security
- Regional cooperation and integration and the agro-food system

Citizens of all African countries can apply for this scholarship

How to Apply?
The application process contains two steps. Your attention is drawn towards the two application deadlines.
Applicants are required to apply for the respective programme at PLAAS, UWC and are subject to their application procedures. Check the PLAAS MPhil & Ph.D. Information Sheet_2020 for more information. The PLAAS application deadline is 31 October 2019.
Once shortlisted, PLAAS, UWC will provide a link to the DAAD-Portal. The DAAD application deadline is 30 November 2019.

According to the University General Calendar Rule A.5.2.
For admission to the MPhil Research in Poverty, Land and Agrarian Studies,
- Applicants must have obtained an Honours degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. sociology, history, economics, political science, agriculture, public administration, development studies, geographical and environmental studies).
- Students must demonstrate a good understanding of their chosen research topic and have research experience in one or more of the following themes – poverty, land and agrarian reform, rural development, and natural resources.
For admission to the Ph.D. in Poverty, Land and Agrarian Studies,
- Candidates must have obtained a Master’s degree in Social Sciences, Arts, Law, Humanities, Environmental Sciences, and Development Studies or any other relevant discipline.
- Students should have achieved a minimum average mark of 65% in the relevant Master’s degree.
- Students must demonstrate a good understanding of their chosen research topic and have research experience in one or more of the following themes – poverty, land and agrarian reform, rural development, and natural resources.
